10 Apr 08. MBDA officially opened its Brussels office today. As we approach a number of important EU and NATO deadlines set for 2009, as defence in Europe becomes more mature, and at a time when new regulatory initiatives are being put forward at Community level, MBDA is moving closer to the institutions of the EU and NATO to contribute more fully to the major decisions that lie ahead, and to respond to the present and future needs of both organisations.

28 May 08. The U.S. Army activated the first battery of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System, developed by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and produced by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], in a ceremony at Fort Bliss, TX. Alpha Battery/4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air & Missile Defense Command will receive 24 THAAD interceptors, three THAAD launchers, a THAAD Fire Control and a THAAD radar as part of the initial fielding.  In addition, the battery will have logistics support assets, such as the Battery Support Center and Integrated Contractor Support System, as well as the necessary spares for a fielded unit. 
28 May 08. SGL Group – The Carbon Company – inaugurated its new Technology & Innovation Center (T&I Center) in Meitingen. With this new opening, the Company’s dispersive global research and development activities are combined under one roof in SGL Group’s largest site worldwide. The new central R&D Center offers space for up to 150 scientific jobs, out of which 15 new jobs are to be created for experts from external research institutes within joint projects. Total investment cost amounts to over €10m.

29 May 08. Centre for Defence Enterprise: Open for business. A brand new centre fostering new technologies for the frontline officially opened its doors. The Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) is an exciting new initiative to help bring bright ideas that could aid current operations to fruition. Situated in the Oxford-London-Cambridge 'Golden Triangle', the Centre will bring together inventors, investors, entrepreneurs and academics who together will incubate new technologies and turn ideas to cutting edge reality. Attending the launch of the CDE, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, Baroness Taylor, said, "The Centre for Defence Enterprise is about tapping into the UK's best talent to develop the next generation of military technology for our Armed Forces. It is an exciting opportunity to expand the MoD's science and technology supplier base for defence.

30 May 08. Rheinmetall Defence to operate German Army’s Combat Training
Centre: Efficient, realistic training for ground forces. Rheinmetall will soon be responsible for running the GÜZ, one of the world’s most advanced combat training centres, a German Army facility located in the Altmark district of Saxony-Anhalt. Starting 1 September 2008, Rheinmetall will take over management of the GÜZ, which the company also played the leading role in creating. The parties signed the contract on May 29th, 2008, at the Berlin Air Show ILA. For Rheinmetall Defence’s Simulation and Training division, the deal represents sales of more than € 100m spread out over the six-year lifetime of the contract, depending on the level of utilization. The principal reasons for handing over the operation to Rheinmetall Defence were economic efficiency and the conceptual approach contained in the proposal.

20 May 08. The Boeing Company last week began using a moving assembly line for final assembly of the P-8A Poseidon in Renton, Wash. This military derivative of the Next-Generation 737-800 is expected to move through the final assembly process at a continuous pace similar to commercial 737s. "This is another important step toward delivering the first P-8A to the U.S. Navy on schedule," said Bob Feldmann, Boeing vice president and P-8 program manager for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. "The entire team is working extremely hard to meet our commitment to the customer." Boeing uses the moving assembly line during final assembly positions for the airplane. The P-8s will be positioned in a straight-line configuration on the factory floor and stay at a production station for a period of time before advancing to the next station. Standard processes, visual control systems and point-of-use staging are in place, allowing work to flow continuously and quickly.

03 Jun 08. General McKiernan assumes command of ISAF. General McKiernan assumed Command of ISAF from US General Dan McNeill during a handover ceremony held on 3 June 2008 in Kabul. The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General John Craddock and the Commander of the Joint Forces Command (JFC) Brunssum, General Egon Ramms, attended the event.“

27 May 08. Major General G S Robison to be Chief of Staff (Capability) in succession to Rear Admiral P L Wilcocks CB DSC with effect from 18 November 2008, and in continuance as Commandant General Royal Marines. First Sea Lord has agreed that Major General Robison should remain CGRM until Major General Salmon returns from his operational tour as MND(SE) in Iraq. I will inform you when Major General Salmon will assume the additional post of CGRM.

EUROPE APPOINTMENTS

27 May 08. Mike Turner, the outgoing chief executive of BAE Systems, was confirmed as chairman-designate of Babcock International, the support services
group. Mr Turner is expected to join Babcock as a non-executive director in the coming weeks with a view to succeeding Gordon Campbell as non-executive chairman when he stands down from the board after eight years in the autumn. (Source: FT.com)

08 May 08. Boeing has named Timothy J. Keating senior vice president for Public Policy, effective June 2. He succeeds Tod R. Hullin, who earlier this year announced his plans to retire from Boeing by the end of 2008. Keating, 46, currently serves as senior vice president, Government Relations, for Honeywell. At Boeing, he will lead company-wide public policy efforts, including all U.S. federal, state and local government liaison operations. He will report to McNerney from Boeing's Washington, D.C. office and join the company's Executive Council.

07 May 08. General Dynamics announced that Nicholas D. Chabraja, the company's chairman and chief executive officer, has advised the board that, consistent with his employment agreement, he will step down as chief executive officer on June 30, 2009. Mr. Chabraja will continue with the company as chairman of the board of directors through the annual meeting of shareholders in May 2010. To ensure continuity in the management and operation of the company, the board of directors today formally approved a succession plan for the position of chief executive officer.  The board announced that Jay L. Johnson, 61, currently a member of the board of directors of General Dynamics and chief executive officer of Dominion Virginia Power, will become vice chairman of the board and an executive officer of the company on September 2, 2008.  He will become chief executive officer on July 1, 2009, following Mr. Chabraja's retirement from that position.  Mr. Johnson has been a member of the General Dynamics board since 2003.

03 Jun 08. Stephen Ball, Managing Director Lockheed Martin UK – INSYS, has been named Vice President and Managing Director with immediate effect. Stephen has been Managing Director of LMUK INSYS since September 2006 and had previously served as the manager of the Combat Systems Division.

21 May 08. Appointment of new Chief Financial Officer at QinetiQ. QinetiQ Group plc. announced the appointment of David Mellors as Chief Financial Officer. It is anticipated that David will take up his new role with effect from the end of August 2008 when he will also join the QinetiQ Board as an Executive Director.

U.S. APPOINTMENTS

02 Jun 08. Raytheon Company made several executive announcements, including a leadership transition at the company's Missile Systems business and the appointment of two new corporate officers. Louise L. Francesconi has announced her plans to retire from the company, effective September 1. Succeeding Francesconi is Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, 44, who has been named president, Raytheon Missile Systems (RMS), effective July Francesconi will work with Lawrence as he transitions into this new role until her retirement date. 

02 June 08. Cobham has completed the acquisition of SPARTA on schedule and announced a number of appointments:
Rear Admiral Tim Heely US Navy (Ret.) appointed as President of SPARTA.   Tim recently left the Navy after 33 years in senior leadership positions.  His last appointment was overseeing 10 programme offices for the Navy including all strike weapons and unmanned aviation vehicles and systems.  Prior to this, he was Commander, Naval Aviation Research and Engineering with responsibility for the operation, development, improvement and engineering support of all US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft.  He holds an MS in Aeronautical Engineering and a BS in American Political Systems.
Lieutenant General G. Thomas McInerney USAF (Ret.) retired after 35 years of military service when Assistant Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Director of the Defense Performance Review and now has his own consulting firm, which introduces advanced technology into the public sector.  He has also been CEO of Business Executives for National Security, working to engage the business community in promoting a more efficient defence establishment and VP of Command of Control for Loral Defense Systems-Eagen. 
James L. Wolbarsht  is currently on the Naval Research Advisory Committee and the Advisory Group for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  He has served on the Missile Defense Advisory Committee and on the External Review Team at the US National Security Agency.  He has been Managing Director for Bearing Point Inc. and Chief Information Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation and President of DEFCON.
Vice Admiral William C. Bowes US Navy (Ret.) retired after 14 years of military service when Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition.

He now works as a consultant on organisational and programme strategies for a number of aerospace and defence companies.  He has also held senior management positions in business units of Northrop Grumman, Litton Industries, Raytheon and Hughes Aircraft Company.

REST OF THE WORLD APPOINTMENTS

29 May 08. QinetiQ announced the appointment of Mike Kalms as CEO of QinetiQ Australia.  This appointment is key to the continued development of QinetiQ’s Australian presence and underlines its strategic importance to its overall Europe, Middle East and Australasia business.  Mike is due to take up his appointment on 16th June.
