Owning the Night is supported by Director Battlespace Manoeuvre, Major General Chris Wilson CBE. Representatives from Capability Ground Manoeuvre, the Individual Capability Group from DE&S and Director Infantry will be present. The event will also target visitors from all levels of UK MoD, Home Office and UK Police involved with firearms, night vision equipment and weapon sighting systems. The UKTI MINIM delegates from 17 countries have been given the option to visit Bisley on the second day.

Key Sponsors include: DRS Technologies Inc., Platinum Sponsor; Finmeccanica Battlespace Solutions, Platinum Sponsor; FLIR Systems Inc, Gold Sponsor; Qioptiq, Gold Sponsor.

The Owning The Night team has made some key appointments to enable the success of what is a first for a U.K. Exhibition. These include:

1. Owning The Night is supported by UKTI DSO EST. The Export Support Team is supporting Owning The Night by managing the live fire aspects of the Event and the safety concerns for the event for EST. This includes supporting Exhibitors in their firearms and systems requirements, the vital safety case and the key task of managing the shooting events during the day and night. All manufactures that require a live demonstration must submit their weapon, ammunition and equipment details 6 weeks before the event and what they want achieve. Companies will not be able to demonstrate live if they turn up on an ad hoc basis on the day. The ranges will be open from 1030 every day and close at the end of the Night Firing demonstrations at 1930. Each Exhibitor will be provided with their own shooting lane on the Stickledown Range which can take any calibre up to 7.62 and .50 cal blanks can also be fired. There are range facilities for rifles up to 7.62 and vehicle mounted 7.62 GPMGs. Manufacturers of gun mounts and other ancillary equipment can work with gun manufacturers to do joint demonstrations.

2. The Organisers have made changes and additions to the Management Committee. Jeremy Staples is appointed as Chairman of the Owning The Night Committee and Peter Hobson, Managing Director of Hobson Industries, an NRA Council Member, has been appointed onto the Management Committee to coordinate the Event. Libby Gendall is managing the accommodation for Exhibitors at Bisley as well as Registration for all Visitors and Exhibitors, Tel: + 44 (0)1483 797777/E-mail: pamd@nra.org.uk. Julian Nettlefold of BATTLESPACE is coordinating the Conference and working with David Harrison to manage Exhibitors. Brian Thomas, Director of Shooting for the NRA is working with UKTI to manage all the shooting events.

3. One of the key enablers for the Event is the ability to provide outside Exhibition tentage which is not only interlinked but also protects the visitors and exhibitors from the elements. Blaythorne Ltd. who recently provided tentage for the CWID Event at Porton Down has agreed to provide all the tentage for the Event using tentage supplied by BASE-X in the U.S.A. Hesco Bastion will also provide a facility for the Range Exhibition site. In addition, Rolls Royce is providing all the power for the range complex.

4. Safety on the ranges is a critical issue and a team of specialist companies has been assembled to provide specialist lighting, markers and targets for the event. Linear Guidance Illumination, LGI, will provide all the range and site markers designating the key range and driving areas, Oxley Developments Ltd. will supply interior and exterior IR-friendly lighting for use in the Exhibition area and on the vehicles whilst Peli will be supplying IR-friendly exterior lighting. M & J Assocs. will supply a new thermal target for the night firing events and Haering will supply electronic targets.

5. The Driving Event will take place next door to the ranges in a designated safety area. Vehicles will be fitted with a range of lighting systems including Oxley IR lighting and some with DRS Technologies Inc. , Selex and FLIR Systems Inc. DVEs. The vehicles will be supplied by Hobson Industries, Land Rover, Supacat and FLIR Systems Inc. All vehicles will have trained drivers and no exhibitors or visitors will be permitted to drive.

6. FLIR Systems Inc. is sponsoring an exclusive shooting competition utilising two shooting lanes
--shooting times (1030hrs - 1230hrs; 1330hrs - 1530hrs; 1600hrs - 1800hrs).

7. FLIR Systems Inc. is also sponsoring catering for MoD and Army personnel on the Range complex and all signage. Food will be on sale for Exhibitors and Visitors.

8. One key change has been to centralise all indoor activities at the Bisley Pavilion which is very close to the range complex. The Conference and Visitor Registration will be located at the Bisley Pavilion, which will also host the dinner on the first night sponsored by DRS Technologies Inc. and Finmeccanica Battlespace Solutions. FLIR Systems Inc. is sponsoring the evening drinks reception to be held at the Artists Rifles Club House.

9. Due to demand from specialist acoustic, eyewear and clothing manufactures, there will be a special exhibition area dedicated to companies supplying this equipment. In addition this equipment will be provided, by agreement, to companies conducting live firing.

10. The Army Air Corps has confirmed that an Apache will be supplied for the Event.

11. There will be a special area designated for the use of thermal imagers to spot ground disruption to detect IEDs. This will include robots from Northrop Grumman and other IED detection equipment.

12. C2, the specialist control tower manufacturer will be providing the Range Tower.

13. There will be drinks and dinner on the first night. The drinks reception is sponsored by FLIR Systems Inc. at the Artists Rifles Club and DRS Technologies Inc. and Finmeccanica Battlespace Solutions are sponsoring the dinner at the Bisley Pavilion

14. Mrs Yvonne Headington will be managing the Press Office and will be the Press Officer for the event. Her contact is: email: dranda@btinternet.com; Mobile: 07989643186. BATTLESPACE will be running email Updates prior to and during the event, please send all press releases to j.nettlefold@battle-technology.com. Please email j.nettlefold@battle-technology to register for a Press Pass.

“We aim to provide visitors and exhibitors alike with an ability to see and use night vision equipment at night and in realistic live-firing conditions. It is crucial for military and Police users to see this equipment in the scenario envisaged by the user.” Peter Hobson said.

The Conference

The Conference, Chaired by Peter Varnish O.B.E., is divided into two half days, managed by BATTLESPACE, with the DMA. On Day 1, the MoD will discuss the current night vision requirements on the ground and on Day 2, Industry will discuss the latest available technology. The Conference Programme consisting of two half days takes place on November 10th and 11th.

The Current Speaker line-up includes a Key Note address from Director Infantry Brigadier Richard Dennis and papers from Brigadier Carew Wilkes, Head of Individual Capability Group, Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), Colonel Peter Eadie, AD Cap Dev, JHC HQ, Joint Helicopter Command and the MoD on Day 1. We very much hope to have a British Army representative who has been in theatre to discuss key requirements. Director Battlespace Manoeuvre Major General Chris Wilson CBE will be available for the Q&A session at the end of Day 1.

The industry Speakers on Day 2 includes Mr. Jon Piatt, VP Warfighter Solutions, DRS RSTA; Finmeccanica Battlespace Solutions; Steve Rickard, Business Development Manager, Land Business Group, Qioptiq; FLIR Systems Inc.; Peter Hedsand, Technical Marketing Manager, Nammo, Sweden and Dr. Tim Bushell, Technical Director, Oxley Developments Limited.

“The current UOR process ensures that the Army has the best equipment to meet the current threat. The Owning The Night Conference will provide the Army with a key platform to state what it requires in theatre to attain its key objectives in defeat of the Taleban and for industry to demonstrate the most up to date equipment for the Army.” BATTLESPACE Editor Julian Nettlefold said.

Qioptiq is sponsoring all the food and drink at the Conference.

Delegate tickets cost £285.00 Please email j.nettlefold@battle-technology to Register for a delegate ticket for the Conference.

The Exhibition

One key change to the Exhibition is to give Exhibitors at the Bisley Pavilion a Table Top rather than a Shell Scheme and a facility at the Range Complex for placing literature. This will enable smaller Companies to have a position at both the indoor and range facilities.

“We have received a great response from industry to exhibit at Owning The Night.” David Harrison said “Key sponsors for the event include DRS and Finmeccanica Battlespace Solutions for the Platinum and Qioptiq and FLIR Systems Inc. for the Gold sponsorship. There is strong interest to participate from companies in Belgium, Poland, Norway, North America, South Africa and Switzerland."
